These are the terms for Treadstone Law's online will — whether you buy it directly on treadstonelaw.ca or through a partner link (for example, a Way to Wealth link). By paying for an online will, you agree to them, in addition to our general Terms of Use.
The online will plan is a do-it-yourself document service. It includes a will, a property power of attorney and a personal care document for the province or territory you choose. You choose every answer, and your documents are assembled automatically from those answers.
Treadstone Law does not give you legal advice through the online will plan. We do not review your answers or your documents, and buying the plan does not make Treadstone Law your lawyer. Portal help covers how to use the website only. If you want legal advice, get it separately — especially if you have a blended family, a business, a trust, property outside Canada, or you are leaving someone out.
You tell us where you live at the start. Your documents follow that province or territory's signing and witnessing rules, and its own type of power of attorney. You confirm that the place you choose is where you live. The plan is not available in Quebec yet.
You are responsible for giving accurate answers, for deciding whether the documents suit you, and for signing and witnessing them exactly as the instructions say. Documents that are not signed and witnessed properly may not be valid.
Payment is due up front, before your file opens. The moment you pay, your file opens — so your online will is non-refundable once your file opens. You'll see this stated plainly at checkout, and we keep a timestamped record of your agreement on your file.
You have 12 months from the day you pay to finish your answers and finalize your will. We'll remind you along the way — at day 3, day 10 and day 21, then monthly, and again at 60, 30 and 7 days before your file is due to close. If you haven't finalized by the end of the 12 months, your file closes. Closing is not a refund — the file simply stops accepting further edits.
Finalizing is a deliberate, one-time step: you'll see a plain warning and type your full name to confirm. Once your will is finalized, it is locked and read-only — you can view and download it, but you can't edit it further. If your circumstances change afterwards, the way to update a finalized will is a codicil (a signed amendment) or, for bigger changes, a brand-new will. A finalized account stays open, read-only, for as long as you need it.
You arrange the signing and witnessing of your will and your two powers of attorney yourself. Your portal gives you step-by-step instructions for each of the three documents, for the province or territory you chose. Treadstone Law does not act as a witness for online wills or powers of attorney.
If you came to us through a partner — for example, a link from Way to Wealth — that partner sees nothing about your will, your answers or your file. Their link only tells us who referred you; which partner referred you is recorded on your file for our own records only, and is never shared with them or anyone else.
To the extent the law allows, our total responsibility to you for the online will plan is limited to the amount you paid for it.
