What exactly is a sponsorship undertaking and what does it commit me to?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

A sponsorship undertaking is a legally binding promise you make to the federal government when you sponsor a family member for permanent residence. By signing the undertaking, you commit to providing your sponsored spouse or partner with basic necessities — food, clothing, shelter, and any other basic requirements — for a defined period after they become a permanent resident.

For spousal sponsorships, the undertaking period is three years from the date your partner becomes a permanent resident. During this period, if your spouse applies for and receives social assistance, you may be required to repay those amounts to the government. The obligation does not disappear if the relationship breaks down — you remain bound by the undertaking even if you separate or divorce within the three-year window.

This is a significant legal commitment. Before you sponsor, you should understand the financial implications and ensure you can realistically meet the obligation. If your circumstances change dramatically after you sponsor — job loss, serious illness — the undertaking remains in effect. Speak with a lawyer to make sure you fully understand what you are agreeing to before you sign.

Key takeaways

  • An undertaking is a binding legal promise to support your sponsored spouse financially
  • For spouses, the undertaking lasts three years from the date they become a permanent resident
  • If your spouse claims social assistance, you may owe repayment even after separation
  • The obligation survives relationship breakdown within the undertaking period
