Can I change from a visitor to a student while I am in Canada?

Changing from visitor status to student status while inside Canada is possible in some circumstances, but it is not always straightforward. You can apply for a study permit from within Canada if you hold a valid visitor record or are authorized to remain in Canada. However, if you entered Canada as a visitor without a visitor record (using only your passport and the standard entry authorization at the border), your authorization to stay is generally for six months, and you would need to apply before that expires.

Importantly, you cannot begin studying while your study permit application is processing unless you already have a study permit. Attending classes as a visitor — even for a single class or semester — without a study permit is a violation of your status.
