What conditions do I have to follow while studying in Canada on a study permit?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

A study permit comes with conditions set by federal immigration law that you must follow throughout your stay. The most important is that you must be enrolled at your DLI and remain a full-time student during each academic session (with limited exceptions for your final semester or medical leave). If you drop to part-time or change schools without updating your permit, you may be in violation.

You must also ensure your permit does not expire. A study permit is not the same as your entry document — if your permit expires while you are in Canada, you are out of status. You should apply to extend or renew well before the expiry date.

Some study permits include an open or restricted work authorization. Working beyond your authorized hours or in unauthorized roles is a serious breach and can affect future applications. Keep a record of your permit conditions and review them carefully.

Key takeaways

  • You must remain enrolled full-time and comply with all permit conditions
  • Your study permit and your entry authorization are different documents — keep both valid
  • Work conditions on the permit are strictly enforced
  • Permit violations can affect future immigration applications including permanent residence
