Do I need to give biometrics for a Canadian study permit application?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

Biometrics — fingerprints and a digital photo — are required for most study permit applicants. This is a federal requirement under Canada's immigration biometrics program. Citizens of certain countries and holders of valid prior biometrics may be exempt, but the exemptions are narrow.

Once you submit your study permit application online and pay the biometrics fee, you will receive instructions about where to give your biometrics. In Canada, you can do this at a Service Canada location. Outside Canada, you typically go to an authorized visa application centre (VAC) in your country. You generally have 30 days to complete your biometrics after receiving the instruction letter.

Biometrics are valid for a specific period and, if you have given them within that window for a previous application, you may not need to give them again. Confirmation of your biometrics validity is shown through your IRCC online account. Not completing your biometrics within the window will cause your application to be abandoned.

Key takeaways

  • Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are required for most study permit applicants
  • You have 30 days from receiving the instruction letter to complete biometrics
  • Visit a Service Canada location in Canada or an authorized VAC abroad
  • Previously given biometrics may still be valid — check your IRCC account
