What documents do I need to apply for a Canadian study permit?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

A study permit application requires several core documents. You will need an acceptance letter from a designated learning institution (DLI) that includes the school's DLI number. You must provide evidence of sufficient financial resources to pay your tuition and cover living expenses for yourself and any dependants while in Canada. A valid passport is required, and it should remain valid for the duration of your intended studies.

Depending on your country of origin, you may also need to provide police certificates (criminal background checks), complete a medical exam with an IRCC-approved physician, and submit biometrics. Biometrics — fingerprints and a photo — are now required for most study permit applicants.

The specific documents required vary by country and individual circumstances. IRCC's online portal generates a personalized document checklist when you start your application. A missing or unclear document is a common reason for delays or refusals. Having an immigration lawyer review your package before submission reduces this risk significantly.

  • Biometrics, medical exams, and police certificates may be required depending on your country
  • IRCC generates a personalized checklist — complete every item on it
  • Legal review before submission reduces the risk of delay or refusal
