I completed two programs back to back — can I combine their lengths for my PGWP?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

IRCC does allow the length of two consecutive programs to be combined in certain circumstances to determine PGWP duration, but the rules are specific. Generally, both programs must be at eligible DLIs, both must qualify individually, and you must have moved directly from one to the other without a significant gap. The total combined length can affect how long your PGWP is issued for.

There are conditions around what "consecutive" means and how much time is allowed between programs. A long gap between completing one program and starting the next may break the chain that allows combination. If only one of your programs qualifies (for example, if the first one was too short on its own), the rules for combination are more complex.

Because the combination rules have been updated and the specifics matter significantly to your PGWP length, this is an area where getting legal advice tailored to your specific program history is strongly recommended before applying.

Key takeaways

  • Two consecutive eligible programs can sometimes be combined for PGWP length purposes
  • Both programs must be at eligible DLIs and meet individual qualifying criteria
  • Gaps between programs can break eligibility for combination
  • Get specific legal advice — the combination rules are detailed and fact-specific
