Do I need to work in a specific job to use my Post-Graduation Work Permit?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

The PGWP is an open work permit, which means you can work in almost any occupation for almost any employer without any restrictions tied to a specific job title or skill level. Unlike some employer-specific or occupation-restricted work permits, the PGWP does not require you to work in the field you studied or in a job that matches your program.

However, if you are planning to use your Canadian work experience to qualify for permanent residence — particularly through the Canadian Experience Class under Express Entry — the occupation you work in matters. CEC requires work experience in eligible occupations (generally skilled roles). Working in a lower-skill occupation during your PGWP period may not count toward CEC eligibility even if the work was legal and authorized.

The distinction between any job being legal on a PGWP and the right job for permanent residence eligibility is an important one. Planning your career and immigration goals together — ideally with an immigration lawyer — helps you make the most of your PGWP period.

Key takeaways

  • The PGWP allows work in any occupation for any eligible employer
  • You are not required to work in your field of study on a PGWP
  • Canadian Experience Class requires skilled-level work — occupation matters for PR eligibility
  • Plan your work experience strategically if permanent residence is your goal
