What do I need to do during my studies to qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit issued by the federal government that allows eligible graduates to work in Canada after completing their studies. To qualify, you must graduate from an eligible program at a designated learning institution, complete a program that meets the minimum length requirements (generally at least eight months of study), and have maintained valid study permit status throughout your studies.

Maintaining status means you did not study without authorization, did not violate your permit conditions, and applied for renewals on time when needed. Gaps in status — even brief ones — can disqualify you from the PGWP. The PGWP also requires that you apply within 180 days of receiving your final transcript or official letter confirming graduation.

Not all programs qualify. Online-only programs completed entirely outside Canada are not eligible. Confirm your program's eligibility before you enrol if the PGWP is part of your immigration plan.

Key takeaways

  • PGWP eligibility requires graduation from an eligible DLI program and maintained permit status
  • You must apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks or graduation letter
  • Permit status violations can disqualify you even if you graduated
  • Confirm program and institution eligibility early — not all programs qualify
