How do I apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit after I finish my program?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

After graduating from an eligible program, you apply for a PGWP through IRCC's online portal. You must submit the application within 180 days of receiving your official proof of graduation — this is typically your final transcript or an official letter from the institution confirming you have completed the program requirements. Meeting the 180-day window is critical; missing it permanently disqualifies you from the PGWP for that program.

You will need your study permit (still valid or expired within a specific window), proof of graduation, and passport. IRCC may also request additional documents. Some applicants can continue working during the processing period if their study permit already included work authorization — but confirm your specific situation before assuming this applies.

Because the PGWP is a one-time permit and a key step toward permanent residence for many graduates, it is worth having an immigration lawyer review your application before you submit.

Key takeaways

  • Apply within 180 days of receiving your official graduation confirmation
  • Missing the 180-day window disqualifies you permanently for that program
  • Your study permit must generally still be valid or recently expired when you apply
  • Legal review of your application reduces the risk of a preventable refusal
