How do I extend my visitor status if I want to stay longer in Canada?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

To extend your stay as a visitor, you must apply to IRCC before your current authorized period expires. Applications are submitted online through IRCC's portal. You will need to show that you have a valid reason to stay longer, that you will leave Canada when your extended stay ends, and that you have the financial means to support yourself during the additional period.

IRCC has discretion to approve or refuse an extension. Common reasons for refusal include insufficient ties to your home country, past immigration violations, or concerns about whether you will genuinely leave Canada at the end of the extended period.

If you apply before your current status expires and your application is still being processed when your status lapses, you may remain in Canada under maintained (implied) status while you wait. However, this does not let you work or study — you remain only as a visitor. If your extension is refused, you must leave Canada promptly. Extensions are not guaranteed, and each application is assessed on its own merits.

Key takeaways

  • Apply for a visitor extension before your current status expires
  • IRCC assesses your ties to home country, finances, and intent to leave Canada
  • Implied status applies during processing if you applied before expiry
  • Extensions are discretionary — refusal means you must leave Canada promptly
