How long does Express Entry take from invitation to permanent residence?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

IRCC publishes a service standard for Express Entry applications, aiming to process the majority of complete applications within six months of receiving them. This clock starts when IRCC receives your full application after an ITA — not when you first create your profile.

Several factors can affect your actual processing time. Applications that are incomplete, have missing documents, or require further verification take longer. Security screenings or medical follow-ups can also add weeks or months. If you or a family member has lived in certain countries or has a complex travel history, background checks may extend the timeline. Applications with a provincial nomination can sometimes move through a dedicated stream.

It is important to monitor your IRCC online account regularly after submission. IRCC communicates all requests — such as biometrics, additional documents, or medical instructions — through the portal. Missing a communication can cause your application to be refused or abandoned. If your timeline is approaching six months with no decision, a lawyer can advise whether a mandamus application or other step is appropriate for your situation.

Key takeaways

  • IRCC's published standard is approximately six months for complete applications.
  • Incomplete applications or complex security checks extend timelines.
  • Monitor your IRCC portal regularly for any requests or updates.
  • A lawyer can advise if processing appears unreasonably delayed.
This is general information, not legal advice. It doesn’t create a lawyer–client relationship, and the rules can change. For advice on your situation, a Treadstone immigration lawyer can help.
