What are category-based Express Entry draws and who do they target?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

Category-based draws are a type of Express Entry invitation round where IRCC selects candidates based on a specific characteristic rather than drawing from the entire pool regardless of category. IRCC has the authority to designate categories each year based on Canada's economic and labour market needs. Established categories have included healthcare occupations, STEM roles, trade occupations, transport workers, agriculture and agri-food workers, and candidates with strong French-language proficiency.

In a category-based draw, IRCC invites candidates who meet the category criteria — starting with the highest CRS scores within that category — down to a minimum cutoff. Because the eligible pool for a given category is smaller than the general pool, cutoffs in category draws are often lower than general all-programs draws, giving candidates in those fields a meaningful advantage.

If your NOC occupation falls into a current priority category or your French scores are strong, you may receive an ITA at a lower CRS score than you would need in a general draw. The specific categories IRCC designates can change year to year, so it is important to check IRCC's current announcements. An immigration lawyer can help you evaluate which draw types you are best positioned for and how to optimize your profile accordingly.

  • Cutoff scores in category draws are often lower than in general draws.
