Can I sponsor my brother or sister to come to Canada?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

Generally, siblings are not eligible to be sponsored to Canada under the family class. The federal Family Class sponsorship stream is limited to spouses, common-law partners, conjugal partners, dependent children, parents, grandparents, and in narrow circumstances, other relatives.

The one exception for siblings is the "lone relative" provision. If you are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who has no spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, parent, child, or other relative in Canada or elsewhere whom you could otherwise sponsor, and if your sibling is orphaned, single, under 18 years old, you may be able to sponsor that sibling. This is an extremely limited exception.

If your sibling does not fit this narrow window, immigration to Canada for them would have to come through a different stream — for example, economic immigration (Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs), a work permit, a study permit, or another federal pathway. An immigration lawyer can help you assess what options, if any, exist for a sibling given their specific profile and your relationship.

Key takeaways

  • Siblings generally cannot be sponsored under the family class
  • A narrow exception exists for orphaned single siblings under 18 if you have no other eligible relatives
  • Non-qualifying siblings may still have other immigration pathways (economic class, work/study permits)
  • Speak with a lawyer to explore available options for a sibling's immigration
