Can I work while I am studying in Canada on a student visa?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

Whether you can work in Canada while studying depends on the conditions of your study permit. Many study permits automatically include authorization to work up to a set number of hours per week off campus during academic sessions and full time during scheduled breaks — but only if your permit includes that authorization. Not all study permits do.

On-campus work is generally permitted without a separate work permit if you have a valid study permit. Off-campus work above authorized hours or outside authorized periods is a violation of your permit, even if your employer does not know it.

Since federal rules have changed over the years regarding off-campus work hours, you should read the conditions printed on your permit and confirm current rules with IRCC or an immigration lawyer rather than relying on general information. Getting this wrong can affect your PGWP eligibility and permanent residence pathway.

Key takeaways

  • Work authorization depends on what is printed on your specific study permit
  • On-campus work is generally allowed; off-campus work has conditions
  • Exceeding authorized hours is a federal permit violation
  • Confirm current rules before starting any job
This is general information, not legal advice. It doesn’t create a lawyer–client relationship, and the rules can change. For advice on your situation, a Treadstone immigration lawyer can help.
