What are the advantages of voluntarily registering for HST before hitting the threshold?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

The main advantage of voluntary HST registration is the ability to claim input tax credits (ITCs) — refunds of the HST you pay on business inputs like equipment, office rent, professional fees, and supplies. If you spend significantly on HST-taxable inputs but your revenue is below $30,000, you are effectively subsidizing the government with that HST you cannot recover unless you register.

For example, a startup spending $20,000 on computers, software subscriptions, and office supplies pays roughly $2,600 in HST on those inputs. Without registration, that amount is just a cost. With registration, you can claim it back through your HST return.

The trade-off is administrative: once registered, you must charge HST on your own taxable supplies, file regular HST returns, and maintain proper records. If your customers are businesses (B2B), they will claim back the HST you charge them anyway, so it is cost-neutral for them. If your customers are consumers (B2C) who cannot claim ITCs, your prices will appear 13% higher unless you absorb the tax.

Key takeaways

  • Voluntary registration lets you recover HST paid on business expenses.
  • Especially valuable for startups and businesses with significant upfront costs.
  • You must charge HST on your own supplies once registered.
  • B2B sellers often benefit most; B2C sellers may face customer price sensitivity.
