Can I carry forward unused RRSP contribution room in Ontario?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

Yes — unused RRSP contribution room carries forward indefinitely. If you did not contribute the maximum amount allowed in previous years, the unused room accumulates and can be contributed in any future year. There is no expiry on carry-forward room as long as you have not yet converted your RRSP to a RRIF or annuity (which must be done by the end of the year you turn 71).

This is a federal program with no Ontario-specific variation — the carry-forward rules are the same for all Canadian residents. Your accumulated RRSP room is shown on your Notice of Assessment each year and is also visible in CRA My Account. The room increases each year by 18% of your prior year's earned income (wages, self-employment income, net rental income, etc.), up to the annual dollar limit.

Strategically using accumulated room — such as making a large catch-up contribution in a high-income year — can produce a larger deduction and tax saving than contributing smaller amounts each year. Over-contributing beyond your total accumulated room by more than $2,000 triggers a penalty tax. If you are unsure of your exact room or want to time contributions for maximum impact, a financial advisor or tax professional can help.
