Is there a tax credit for travel within Ontario?

TSL Written by the Treadstone Law team· Updated June 2026

Ontario introduced the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit as a temporary measure for 2022 to encourage residents to explore Ontario following the pandemic. The credit allowed Ontario residents to claim a portion of eligible accommodation expenses (hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, campgrounds) for leisure travel within Ontario during 2022. It was a refundable credit, meaning it could result in a refund even if you owed no tax.

However, the Ontario Staycation Tax Credit was a one-year program for the 2022 tax year only. It has not been renewed for subsequent years. As of the current period, there is no active Ontario provincial tax credit for domestic tourism expenses. If you are filing for 2022 and did not claim this credit, you can request an adjustment to your 2022 return through the CRA (within the 10-year adjustment window).

For general travel, there is no ongoing Ontario or federal personal income tax credit for tourism or vacation expenses. Some northern Ontario residents may qualify for the Northern Ontario Energy Credit as part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit, but that relates to energy costs, not travel. Always check the most current provincial budget announcements to see whether any new incentives have been introduced.

Key takeaways

  • The Ontario Staycation Tax Credit was a 2022-only program and has not been renewed.
  • If you missed the claim for 2022, you can request a T1 adjustment within 10 years.
  • There is currently no ongoing Ontario tax credit for personal travel within the province.
  • Check provincial budget announcements for any future tourism incentives.
